The Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) was created by TfL to reduce pollution and improve air quality across London. It applies to cars, vans, motorcycles, mopeds, buses, coaches, minibuses, lorries and most diesel vehicles. If your vehicle does not meet the required emission standards, you must pay a daily charge in addition to the London Congestion Charge.
ULEZ operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, every day of the year except Christmas Day. Since 2021 the boundary has expanded to cover all areas within the A406 North Circular and A205 South Circular roads, and in August 2023 it was extended to cover all London boroughs. Check the TfL site for more information and interactive maps.
To avoid the daily charge, vehicles must meet the following minimum standards:
Compliance is based on the official emissions data held by the DVLA, not simply the age of the vehicle.
As a general guide, petrol cars registered after 2005 usually meet Euro 4, while diesels registered after September 2015 are normally Euro 6 compliant.
Use our free ULEZ check above and you’ll instantly see if a vehicle is compliant, non-compliant or exempt.
The daily ULEZ charge is £12.50 for cars, vans and motorbikes. For heavy vehicles such as lorries, coaches and buses the charge is £100 per day. Penalty charges apply if payment is missed.
The charging period runs from midnight to midnight. Payments can be made through the official TfL website, using the TfL Pay to Drive app or by setting up Auto Pay if you drive into London frequently. Visit the TfL website for full payment details.
Certain vehicles are exempt from the ULEZ charge, including historic vehicles over 40 years old, London taxis, vehicles for disabled users and some specialist vehicles. See the TfL website for full details on discounts and exemptions.
